TRAUMA AND PTSD Counseling
Whatever it is you’ve heard about healing from trauma, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder or PTSD, just know it is possible to heal and even grow from your traumatic experience/s. Hence the term Posttraumatic Growth.
Life is full of unknowns, ups and downs, and at times may be disturbingly unpredictable. Some traumas are easier to overcome. These are informally called “little t traumas”. You lived through a shocking event and with time were able to make sense of it and healed from it in a healthy way. Other traumas are called “big T Traumas”, meaning you lived through a more significant or repetitive shocking event/s that left your psyche and nervous system significantly rattled.
Please know it is normal to be negatively impacted by a traumatic event. A common description of the aftereffects of trauma is often expressed as: “You are having a normal reaction to an abnormal event or experience.” You are not weak. Rather, you are human.
Do I need trauma counseling?
Trauma or PTSD can affect you in many ways, ranging from mild to severe and overwhelming. You may feel anxious, unsafe, disinterested in being around others, have difficulty connecting with others, and lack empathy.
Your mind may be overrun with re-experiencing the trauma through flashbacks and/or nightmares, resulting in feelings of anxiety, irritability, or despair. Sometimes these feelings or symptoms may come on suddenly and strongly which may be a sign that you are having a panic attack. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, I am here to help.
What is Trauma or PTSD Counseling?
I help clients recover from trauma using Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT) which is strongly recommended by the American Psychological Association (APA) for the treatment of Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). CPT is structured and lasts for 12 sessions. CPT is suitable for clients who are willing to write about their trauma between sessions and read aloud to their therapist. CPT is educational and offers many a path to recovery from PTSD. Additionally, CPT has a lot to teach for coping with future stressors. I like its structured format and I’ve seen it work. I’ll be there to support you on your healing journey. You can learn more about CPT on the APA’s website at: www.apa.org/ptsd-guideline/treatments/cognitive-processing-therapy
