Anxiety and Anxiety Counseling
Some anxiety in life is normal and healthy as it signals an unsafe situation from which we need protection. But, when anxiety becomes a part of your everyday life and negatively impacts your daily functioning, it may be time to speak with a counselor.
We all know what anxiety feels like. That lump in your throat, heart racing, butterflies in your stomach, shakiness and sweating when you’re faced with a stressor or change.
For some, those sensations dissipate once a stressor has been resolved. For others, anxiety does not resolve and may even become worse over time interfering with daily activities including work, school, socializing and relationships. This is called an anxiety disorder and anxiety counseling can help.
Do I need anxiety counseling?
Anxiety can affect you in many ways, ranging from mild to severe intensity. You may feel tense, on edge, unable to relax, and suffer from nausea, irritability, sweating, difficulty breathing or a racing heartbeat.
You may be overcome with worry, restlessness, a sense of impending doom, frustration, irritability, or despair. When these feelings and symptoms come on suddenly and strongly, it may be a sign of a panic attack. If this sounds like you, you may benefit from anxiety counseling.
Is it true that anxiety is a necessary emotion?
As much as we hate to feel anxious, in its most basic form anxiety serves as a reminder to keep us safe and out of harm’s way. Sensations of anxiety have kept humans safe by alerting us to danger. Think prehistoric times and saber-toothed tigers. Sensations of anxiety kept early humans from trying to pet the big tiger.
Nowadays, an anxiety disorder can cause intense sensations without an immediate threat. A minor conflict, deadlines, life changes can cause anxiety as intense as if there were a real threat to your life. Anxiety counseling can help reduce these intense sensations and help you live a more calm and balanced life.
How does anxiety counseling work?
Together, you and I will develop a treatment plan specific to your needs. We’ll identify goals for treating your anxiety. I will teach you several calming techniques for anxiety, as well as teach you specific coping skills for anxiety. I use Mindfulness and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) techniques for anxiety. These are easy to learn and incorporate into daily practice. With daily practice you should notice a reduction in your anxiety. Medications for anxiety also exist which may be prescribed by a general practitioner. If you’re local to the greater Dayton-WPAFB area and are interested in medication for anxiety, I can refer you to an area prescriber who accepts insurance and self-pay.
Whatever it is that causes you to feel anxious, anxiety counseling can help manage and reduce symptoms. Reach out today to learn more!
